DANCE THEATRE ARTS SUMMER SCHOOL 2011

After 2 successful seasons in 2009 and 2010, the Dance Theatre Arts Summer School returns once again with even more exciting programs to give kids and youths a great and meaningful recreation in the June 2011 Holidays.

Summer School is designed as a short holiday program to enhance dance, drama and performance skills and the overall confidence of children and teens (age 3-16).

I had a great time at this summer dance program. I'm really glad that I came all the way from Malaysia to Singapore for this. I've made new friends and met new people. This program has helped me improve my dance technique, posture, expressions, and vocal technique. I loved everything about this program.

How children between 3-8 will benefit from this program?

Improve their body conditioning,

Participants can choose to participate in several stream of activities depending on their interest and aptitudes:

Dance 1 (3-5 years)

Dance 1
Children are introduced to the basics of ballet, jazz and contemporary dance through fun and creative approaches.

Dance 2
This class will help children understand dance technique through creative approaches. Children will be taught ballet, jazz and contemporary dance.

Song & Dance 1/2
This class encourages children to explore their singing voice. It also introduces children to the musical theatre singing and movement style.

Speech & Drama 1/ 2
Children will learn to express themselves through sound and spoken expression. They will also learn basic mime skills.

Art & Craft 1/ 2
Children will learn to create simple craft projects using various artistic techniques.

The Normal Program for 9 plus years olds will help them:

Gain confidence in everything they do
Develop the belief in excellence to do well in whatever they do
Nurture their love of creative activity, dance, music and drama
Enjoy and take a break from School Work and Activity....participate in:
Jazz Acrobatics
dance style is vibrant and energetic. You will also learn acrobatic and gymnastics moves that can be incorporated into this style of dance.

Contemporary/ Acrobatics
Contemporary dance is the name given to a group of 20th century concert dance forms. It is a collection of systems and methods developed from modern and postmodern dance. This elective introduces you to more creative ways of moving your body.

Stage Combat/ Martial Arts
If you enjoy action movies, by Jackie Chan, this is the elective for you. You will learn basic stunts and how this can be adapted into dance and musical theatre stage performance.

Ballet/ Acrobatics
In this elective you will learn a small part of a classical ballet variation from a well known ballet. (eg, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella). You will also learn acrobatic and gymnastics moves that can be incorporated into classical ballet performance.

Song & Dance
This style of dance is what you would see in musical theatre productions, such as Cats, Oliver and Annie. It requires a performer to sing and dance as a chorus, an even perform acrobatic skills. The dance style in this elective will be tap dancing.

Singing Vocal Technique
This elective is ideal for anyone who wishes to develop vocal skills for singing. You will learn safe exercises for singing. You will also learn how to use your voice in a safe and correct manner in daily speech,

English Speech & Drama
Participants in this elective will learn basic vocal and speech technique for stage, and how to use their voice in a safe and correct manner in daily speech. You will also learn drama techniques for stage.

Character Dancing
Character dancing is a theatrical representation of European National dances. This style of dancing is often seen in ballets like Swan Lake, Coppelia and La Fille Ma Gadee. This elective will teach you the technical elements of character dance

Special Advance Program for 13+ year olds

This is a 4 day intensive program for children who have a keen interest to improve their dance skills and gain the confidence to perform on the big stage. During the week, you will get a taste of Dance Theatre Art's unique dance and performance teaching approach. You will also experience all the different aspects of performing arts that Dance Theatre Arts offers.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM DIRECTORS

Gwyneth Har is graduate in dance from the Victorian College of the Arts in Australia. She is a Royal Academy of Dance registered teacher (RAD RTS), and has teaching certification under the Australasian Arts Theatre of Dance (ATD).

She studied the Russian Vaganova method under the late Madam Janina Cunova, one of the greatest teacher’s listed in the book “20th Century great Ballet Masters”. Gwyneth is experienced to perform and teach in various dance styles, and musical theatre.

Her performing credits include dance and musical theatre works in overseas arts festivals and competitions. She has done workshops and secondments with various internationally acclaimed companies including the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Stephen Petronio Dance Company and Bhatsheva Dance Company.

Gwyneth has trained and coached solo and competitive dance teams in Singapore and overseas, with her students achieving excellent results. This includes the prestigious RAD Adeline Genee Awards, Australian Ballet Scholarships, and the ATOD, Scholarships.

Gwyneth received her first education in Classical Ballet in Singapore under Miss Penny Low and Mrs Lorraine Simon.

Melissa Har graduated from the University of New South Wales with a minor concentration in Dance & Performance Studies. She studied the Russian Vaganova method, at the prestigious Tanya Pearson’s Classical Coaching Academy. At the academy, she participated and won in many Eisteddfodds competitions, thus receiving various international scholarships to participate in professional dance summer intensive programs in Sydney and the United States.

Melissa has performed with the Sydney City Youth Ballet and the English National Ballet companies. She has also performed in numerous contemporary works by internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Jiri Kylian and Natalie Weir.

An associate member of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Melissa is competent at teaching the Academy’s syllabus. She began training in the academy’s syllabus under Mrs Lorraine Simon and Miss Penny Low and has attained Distinctions in all the levels of the academy’s examinations. She is also competent in teaching contemporary, acrobatics and jazz. Melissa is competent in choreographing full length dance works as well as Musical Theatre.
